Essay Topics on Dilemmas of Pluralism
Essay Topics on Dilemmas of PluralismI have two essays, a short one and a longer one that will be posted soon on this blog on issues of pluralism, multiculturalism, and dilemmas of pluralist democracy. These essays were written for a sociology class on the themes of pluralism, multiculturalism, and dilemmas of pluralist democracy. I chose these topics because they are less controversial than the ones I wrote earlier this year.I had the idea for these essays after reading about some dilemmas that face contemporary societies in which multi-cultures coexist. I asked myself, 'What dilemmas should we be asking ourselves? What is the line between real and imaginary pluralism? What is a true conflict between true pluralism and plurality of choices?'Many of my friends and acquaintances that know me well disagree with me that the dilemma is far from real, because they feel that all pluralists want is diversity and live in a democracy where the media are our only reference. Others think that t he dilemmas of pluralism are not as bad as they are portrayed in media. We can look at both sides of the argument in this blog entry. The reality is that there are real dilemmas of pluralism in our society and for those that do not consider themselves as members of any particular religion, they are no doubt ready to accept diversity of all sorts. They cannot deny that they have to learn how to live in a multi-cultural society with all its challenges and difficulties. Yet, for some, this does not make them a true pluralist, since they are not willing to give up their right to their own culture, religion, and language, no matter how difficult it may be.The dilemmas of pluralism are also experienced by Muslims, and for those Muslims who consider themselves as citizens of the world, they need to understand that the diversity is not acceptable. Thus, they need to learn to accept diversity. Yet, for many, this would mean the end of their culture and religion. Therefore, they have to unders tand the complexity of being a citizen of the world and also to adapt themselves to a certain degree of multiculturalism. The dilemmas of pluralism are actually people's perception of conflict. For example, while some may believe that true multiculturalism means that everyone has the freedom to choose whatever they wish, others may feel that true multiculturalism only means that people have the freedom to express their religious and cultural preferences without fear of repercussion. So, what are the dilemmas of pluralism? My answer to this question is still waiting. For now, I will say that as a sociologist, I hope to contribute to the debate.
